Southland Football bringing high profile speaker Nanogirl south

Southland Football bringing high profile speaker Nanogirl south

Southland Football have scored a coup with the news that Dr Michelle Dickinson (MNZM), aka Nanogirl, will come south for two speaking engagements on Thursday 2 September, one for the south’s junior footballers and one for the corporate and business sector.

As a keynote speaker, Michelle loves to speak on the future of education and work, innovation and technology, change management, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and entrepreneurship. She is a co-founder of Nanogirl Labs which is an in-person and digital platform that highlights positive role models with fun and engaging storylines and kinaesthetic based learning helping everyone see that they can be a creator not just a consumer. Nanogirl Lab helps people have a meaningful relationship with technology, no matter what their educational background or socioeconomic status.

Dickinson will deliver a presentation at the Ascot Park Hotel in Invercargill at 3.30pm on Thursday 2 September entitled ‘Empowering Our Young Stars to Dream Big” for those involved in junior football, while later in the evening from 5.15pm she will deliver an address on Technology and Innovation in Business at Bill Richardson Transport World in Invercargill. The Junior Football presentation is free to junior members while the Transport World event will see 250 tickets available from the Southland Business Chamber (southlandchamber.co.nz) at a cost of $60 per head. Complimentary nibbles will be served on arrival and a cash bar will operate.

Southland Football President Nick Hamlin says, “the board for some time wanted to bring someone to Southland to shine a spotlight on our sport while giving back to our amazing group of young players. We wanted to find someone that could be an inspiration to our juniors – it’s not about all reaching the highest level of playing the game, which is why we didn’t go for a sports star, but in life in general. A lot of our players play the game for the love of it, wellbeing, playing and learning skills as a team.”

“Michelle will also be an amazing guest speaker to the region for anyone in business – we very rarely get someone of her calibre to Southland,” Hamlin added. “Southland football has committed a high level of funds to bring Michelle to town so really want local businesses to sign up and attend the event as this does two things – they get to hear Michelle but they are then allowing Southland Football to provide the free event to our local youth as all local business have a major connection to our communities.
