Applications open for SBS Bank Academy Southland

SBS Bank Academy Southland is taking applications for the next intake of future inspiring Southlanders.

The talent development academy provides a two-year programme supporting athletes in areas including strength and conditioning, mental skills, nutrition and athlete life.

Academy Southland coordinator Carly Anderson said the goal of the programme was to set athletes up for success both in sport and life, including readying them for the national high-performance pathway.

“The programme is for young people achieving at a high level in Southland who are capable of reaching the national or international level,” Anderson said.

“We have supported athletes across a wide range of sports since the programme began – everything from archery to umpiring.”

Highlanders age group rugby player Jacob Mika, New Zealand touch representative Tia Fowle, 2021 SBS Bank Tour of Southland stage winner Josh Burnett and world junior rowing champion Shakira Mirfin are recent graduates of the Academy.

“It’s also really important to point out that our aim is to support the whole person, not just the athlete. We are really proud of what graduates achieve away from the sportsfield, including the likes of Harvard graduate Sammy Murrell.”

While many young sportspeople have had their important competitions cancelled during the pandemic, the role of the Academy is as important as ever, Anderson said.

“This isn’t just about preparing for a pinnacle event; this is about long-term development and creating tools for life.”

Applications for the 2022 intake close 5pm, February 24.
